The overnight trip to Chiricahua National Monument, on March 18 and 19 is still being considered so please let me know if you would be committed. Our thought is a Friday hike at either Fort Bowie or Cochise's Stronghold, check-in at the Best Western at Wilcox, dinner at Big Tex Barbecue Dining Car and then an early hike to Chiricahua National Monument on Saturday. We should return home that day around 6 - 7 p.m.

Friday's Hikes, February 25, 2002

Short Hike:

Casa Grande Mountain 3-4 miles

Hike at Casa Grande Mountain led by Denis. His hike averages 3-4 miles and is usually back to Palm Creek by noon. This hike leaves from the parking lot directly in front of the Ballroom entrance at 8:00 a.m. on Fridays and hikers must have a Palm Creek Hiking Club Membership and Waiver.

Medium Hike:

Sabino; Bear Canyon to Seven Falls, 7.3 miles

Hike from the Visitor's Center to Seven Falls, about 1 hour and twenty minutes, and back to the Shuttle Stop for a ride back to the Visitor's Center. Hikers will need to purchase a Crawler Ticket as soon as possible, preferably the 10:15 slot and $6.00 each, from https://sabinocanyoncrawler.com. Parking is $8.00 unless you have an America the Beautiful Pass to display on your dash. ( note: Many people in the club have this pass and we are seldom short!)

Long Hike:

Sabino: Bear Canyon to Seven Falls, 9.2 miles

Hike from the Visitor's Center to Seven Falls and back. Parking is $8.00 unless you have an America the Beautiful Pass displayed.

This is a fairly easy hike up a canyon to a set of waterfalls at the base of a steep canyon. It is a very scenic hike that follows a creek bed and crosses seven times in the course of the hike. Tall peaks surround the falls area and there is a large area of flat rock to walk on, sit and eat lunch while enjoying the views and falls. (note: I checked All Trails reviews and someone noted yesterday that crossing the water was pretty easy as the water level was not that high and Tuscon's Temperature on Friday is forecast to be partly sunny with a high of 65. Don't know yet what their rainfall total was today!)

Directions:

GPS: Sabino Canyon Visitor Center

Proceed on I-10 south to exit 248, Ina Rd and turn left. Continue on Ina Rd, which becomes Skyline Drive and then Sunrise Drive. (Don't worry, just stay on Ina to the end of the road and make a left turn. The entrance is a few yards up the road and on your right. Proceed through the tollbooth on the left side if you have a pass and the right side to pay the $8.00 for parking. It is approximately 70 miles to the Visitor's Center and takes about 1 hour and twenty minutes. There are restrooms at the center.

Upcoming Hike: March 4, 2022

Picketpost Loop Trail (Two groups)

Remember: (I don't know how anyone could forget this by now!),

All hikers meet in front of the main entrance to the ballroom about 7:30 a.m. to sign up on both the hike sign-up sheet and the carpool sign-up sheet. New members need to pay their membership fee ($10.00 for the season), sign their waiver, have vaccination cards validated for carpooling, receive their stickers and then sign up on both the sign-up sheet and vehicle carpool sheet.

Hikers are encouraged to get some exercise and socialize while enjoying the scenery and fresh air. Our hikes are designed to be an outing, not a race! Riders need to remember to reimburse the driver $10.00 and drivers need to make sure that all the same hikers they take return with them. We leave at 8:00 a.m. sharp and return somewhere between 2 and 4 p.m.

If for some reason a hike must be cancelled, you will receive an email by 6:00 a.m. and you can go back to bed!
